DR. JEANNE LOFSTEDT SWORN IN AS PRESIDENT: The CVMA's 56th President takes the gavel at CVMA ceremony in Halifax.

Abstract
At the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's Annual Convention in Halifax in July, Dr. Jeanne Lofstedt, president-elect, accepted the presidential gavel from Dr. Michael Baar. She is the second female president in the Association's history. As the associate dean of Academic Affairs at the Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), University of Prince Edward Island, Dr. Lofstedt already has more than a full plate of responsibilities. But rising to any challenge is her forte, and this new role she accepts with her usual enthusiasm and energy. “In the upcoming year, I plan to build on the work of my predecessors by continuing outreach efforts to the profession and maintaining the momentum of collaborative lobbying efforts. I will strive to develop closer ties between the CVMA and its youngest members, the veterinary students, and to facilitate development of leadership skills in the veterinary profession through the establishment of an annual CVMA Leadership Workshop in Ottawa,” says Dr. Lofstedt. Dr. Lofstedt has a lengthy list of accolades and achievements. One of her latest was being named Woman Veterinarian of the Year in 2001 by the Association for Women Veterinarians. In nominating Dr. Lofstedt for this award, Dr. Timothy Ogilvie, dean of the AVC, noted that even with her extremely complex set of obligations as associate dean of Academic Affairs, which also comprises student affairs and continuing education, Dr. Lofstedt has kept her hand in teaching and has managed to maintain her research and publishing activities. While it's true that she takes on many diverse projects — sometimes with multiple roles — at the same time, Dr. Lofstedt is known for her sustained and sensitive competence. Dean Ogilvie attributes her broad capacity to her intellect, organizational skills, and collaborative approach to problem-solving. After graduating with 6 undergraduate awards from the University of Pretoria's veterinary school in Onderstepoort, South Africa, Dr. Lofstedt moved to North America with her husband, Robert, also a veterinarian. Her studies of, and passion for, veterinary medicine have taken her to the University of Saskatchewan's Western College of Veterinary Medicine, to Iowa State University (where she was described as faultless a clinician as a human could be), and to Tufts University, where she taught a wide variety of courses in large animal medicine, including clinical sciences. While at Tufts, she won a Norden Distinguished Teaching Award. The Lofstedts left the United States for Prince Edward Island. Since accepting the position as the first associate dean of Academic Affairs in 1987, Dr. Lofstedt has defined the scope of the position's role. Within veterinary medicine in general, her research papers, contributions to books, positions on editorial boards, and numerous lectures to veterinarians and to owners of animals have amply contributed to solving clinical questions, the needs of practitioners for continuing education, and specific programs that contribute to the management of the health of populations of large animals, especially those that produce food and fiber. The Lofstedts have 3 children, who are no doubt used to their mother's fast pace and will welcome Dr. Lofstedt's new role as president of CVMA with pride and encouragement.
