Abstract
Comme son titre l’indique, le texte d’Yves Frenette constitue un tour d’horizon de l’histoire sociale de la francophonie nordaméricaine, entre le départ de la France du continent, en 1763, et la Première Guerre mondiale. Divisé en deux périodes, ce long xixe siècle « franco-américain » voit tout à la fois l’expansion et la contraction du fait français, à la mesure, d’une part, des migrations à partir des vieux foyers de peuplement qu’étaient la vallée du Saint-Laurent, l’Acadie et la Louisiane, et, d’autre part, de l’ascendance hégémonique de la langue anglaise. Après avoir fait ressortir brièvement ce double mouvement, notre collègue montre comment l’Amérique française postcoloniale a pendant longtemps été quasi ignorée des historiens. Il passe ensuite en revue les aires francophones du continent : le « grand » Canada français, l’Ontario français, l’Acadie, la Louisiane, les pays métis, les enclaves franco-européennes. Ainsi, la contribution d’Yves Frenette constitue-t-elle à la fois un bilan et une feuille de route interprétative de l’histoire sociale de l’Amérique française.
