Ce dossier traite des rapports de la sociologie avec l’histoire, qui renvoient à ses rapports avec le passé et, finalement, avec le présent. La sociologie a ainsi été proche de l’histoire à ses débuts, puis s’en est écartée comme dans une volonté d’émancipation et d’effet de scientificité. Elle s’en rapproche à nouveau aujourd’hui. Cette présentation analyse les différentes formes d’hybridation intervenues entre les deux disciplines (histoire sociale, sociologie historique et sociohistoire) et dégage les spécificités de la sociologie de l’éducation dans ses rapports à l’histoire. Les institutions éducatives sont paradoxalement conservatrices, mais en réforme permanente. Les deux aspects rendent obligatoire une connaissance historique, à la fois pour démystifier le rapport au passé de l’école, qu’il soit progressiste ou nostalgique, et pour situer les réformes éducatives dans la longue durée du changement social.
