L'objectif de cet article est de présenter une nouvelle méthode de détection d'un couvert de neige sèche en région de haute montagne alpine. Les résultats présentés ont été obtenus à partir de données RSO en polarisation complète, acquises en bande L et C, lors de la mission expérimentale SIR-C menée en avril et octobre 1994 sur les Alpes françaises du sud. En raison de la grande diversité des environnements naturels alpins, la première étape de ces travaux consiste à classifier les milieux naturels sous jacents, tels que les forêts et les surfaces ouvertes, à partir des données d'été en bande L. La neige sèche est ensuite discriminée au moyen de méthodes polarimétriques adaptées à chaque milieu, à partir des données d'hiver en bande C. Les forêts enneigées sont détectées à partir de l'indicateur polarimétrique , relatif à la nature du mécanisme de diffusion. Dans le cas des surfaces ouvertes enneigées, une procé-dure originale d'optimisation polarimétrique (PCVE) est proposée pour accroître la variation du contraste polarimétrique été/hiver dû à la présence de neige. Les performances de la méthode en bande L et C sont testées sur deux sites et les résultats sont comparés aux images optiques acquises simultanément (Landsat-5). Cette approche s'inscrit dans la préparation au nouveau capteur RADARSAT-2 de l'Agence spatiale canadienne (ASC).
