The periodic health evaluation (PHE) has become an essential tool to document health status and to facilitate injury prevention in athletes. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has developed a standardized form to document the PHE, which should include a detailed personal and family medical history, as well as a comprehensive physical exam. The strongest scientific evidence for the completion of a PHE comes from the potential detection of risk factors for sudden cardiac death (SCD). Screening for Marfan's syndrome carries particular cardiological significance in a volleyball population. Noninjury-related medical conditions affecting systems other than the cardiovascular system occur frequently in elite athletes: pulmonary, gastrointestinal, hematological, dermatological, urological, immunological, endocrine, and ophthalmological conditions all occur with reasonable frequency. Musculoskeletal conditions are most commonly encountered, and can occur at any time throughout the season. Ankle injuries are the most common acute injury affecting volleyball players, accounting for up to half of all reported volleyball injuries.
