Bien que la division du travail affichée par les think tanks tende à présenter le travail des experts comme apolitique, cet article propose de l’envisager comme une activité politique. Dans le cadre d’une enquête de terrain consacrée à Terra Nova, ce travail apparaît tout d’abord comme un exercice pour lequel les acteurs ont intériorisé la dimension politique de leur activité. Par les anticipations et les choix qu’ils opèrent, ils produisent du politique avant même que leurs recommandations soient endossées par un décideur public. Ensuite, il s’agit également d’une activité politique dans une seconde acception, en ce sens où la participation au think tank constitue une forme d’engagement politique pour les experts, avec des sociabilités et des rétributions qui lui sont attachées.
