ESSAI P LUS DE VINGT-CINQ ANS APRÈS SA MORT, l'auteur de Prochain épisode resteencore, à bien des égards, une énigme.Énigme savamment entretenue, en partie, par l'intéressé lui-même, qui prenait un plaisir manifeste à brouiller les pistes tant sur sa personne que sur ses idées, à multiplier les déclarations contradictoires, lancées à l'emporte-pièce dans le but précis de désarçonner l'adversaire et de l'amener à résipiscence.Mais énigme, aussi, soutenue, amplifiée, idéalisée à dessein par un Québec issu de la Révolution tranquille, qui tenait à tout prix à se donner un « grand » écrivain.Or, on le sait, les images d'Épinal ont pour défaut de transformer des réalités complexes en maximes aisées à saisir, mais qui finissent toujours, en fin de compte, par obnubiler, sinon même fausser, le sens profond des choses qu'elles cherchent à représenter.
