El artículo analiza las transformaciones socioeconómicas suscitadas en el municipio de San Martín Texmelucan durante el periodo 1980-2010, bajo la mirada del enfoque de nueva ruralidad. La información se sustenta en revisión bibliográfica y documental, recorridos de campo, entrevistas a profundidad con informantes clave y análisis de información geoespacial. Al respecto, se viene verificando un acelerado proceso de urbanización a partir de la década de los ochenta y noventa, y es en la década de los noventa cuando se configuran dos tipos de conurbaciones: central y periférica. En esta década, se originó un cambio de base económica agrícola a una industrial. Una década después, se presenta un claro movimiento de terciarización de lo rural. En el ámbito de los cambios espaciales, se encontró una importante disminución en la superficie agrícola, de vegetación y humedal, mientras que el área urbana se incrementó.
