Alleviating Geysers through Standpipes in Sewer Systems

Abstract
Geysers in sewer systems are receiving considerable attention due to the public safety concerns. There have been relatively limited studies on geyser formation process and its association with air release from pressurized pipes, consequently very few relevant mitigation measures have been proposed. A large physical model was initiated to study the geysering flow through standpipes and to examine key parameters which may have great influence on geysers. Air-control plates and throttled vent pipes were found to be remarkably effective in alleviating geyser intensity and pressure oscillations in the present study. For vent pipes with diameter d = 0.04 m and 0.06 m, adding an air-control plate with an orifice (d1 = 0.01 m) resulted in much weaker water jets through the orifice and the pressure peak was also reduced by about 70% and 55%, respectively. If cover blow-off occurred in the air release process, a much larger pressure spike could emerge, with the peak about 3.5 times as large as that without cover blow-off.
