Abstract
À première vue, les travaux de recherche sur la gestion de la classe sont assez récents; ils datent d’une quarantaine d’années environ. Un examen plus approfondi fait toutefois apparaître des préoccupations pédagogiques similaires, sans toutefois porter ce nom de gestion de classe. L’ouvrage des Frères des écoles chrétiennes, Les douze vertus d’un bon maître, publié en 1785, est exemplaire à cet égard. On y recense dans le menu détail tout ce que le doit maître doit faire et éviter quand il fait la classe. Nombre de ces stratégies de gestion de classe sont identiques à celles proposées par des auteurs contemporains. Plus encore, dans ce relevé systématique des bonnes pratiques pédagogiques, apparaît une forme d’ambiguïté, un “juste assez”, un “ni trop, ni trop peu” qui indique qu’à travers la méthode, il y a la manière, que la façon de faire est plus que la chose faite. C’est sans doute là que réside le fondement de l’attitude professionnelle en enseignement.
