Cette étude se propose d’analyser comment les personnages principaux des romans d’Yves Thériault et de Gaétan Soucy évoluent sans la présence de leur père respectif. Le jour du suicide de son père, Alice (La petite fille qui aimait trop les allumettes) se voit endosser un rôle qui jusqu’à présent lui était inconnu : celui de la responsabilité et de la survie de sa famille. Elle qui toute sa vie a été considérée comme un garçon va très vite devenir une femme et puis une mère. La mort de son père sera l’élément déclencheur de son développement personnel et de sa prise de conscience identitaire. Après avoir atteint l’âge de la maturité, Agaguk décide de quitter sa tribu et de partir vivre avec sa femme dans la toundra. Par ce geste, il rompt avec les traditions autochtones et ainsi avec le chef de la tribu, son père. Ce dernier ne représentait plus les valeurs des Inuits selon Agaguk. Sans son père et sans la tribu, Agaguk devra relever des défis conséquents : notamment qu’est-ce qu’être un bon mari ? Un bon Inuit ? Et enfin un bon père ? La mort symbolique du père d’Agaguk le projettera vers des questionnements auxquels il sera le seul à devoir trouver les réponses. Nos deux personnages vont devoir apprendre rapidement à évoluer et grandir sans leur père (que ce soit par choix ou par dépit), mais qui plus est, ils devront apprendre à être parents.
