Comment assurer la protection d'aires naturelles exceptionnelles et leur mise en valeur economique par une forme responsable d'exploitation touristique en assurant un benefice economique pour les territoires et les communautes locales avoisinantes ? Comment determiner si un projet est ecologiquement soutenable ? socialement viable ? economiquement durable ? A quelles conditions l'ecotourisme peut-il creer une richesse collective, une plus-value sociale ? Pour reflechir aux tenants et aboutissants de ces questions, les auteurs privilegient un eclairage multiple : des trajectoires plurielles, en provenance de la France, des Caraibes, de l'Australie, du Costa Rica, du Nunavut et du Quebec, tantot analysees sous l'angle economique, social ou culturel, tantot sous l'angle de l'ecotouriste, du voyagiste, du parc ou de la communaute ou, encore, sous celui de la foret, de la terre ou de la mer.
