Abstract
Au milieu des annees 1950, dans la municipalite rurale de Saint-Leonard-de-Port-Joli, la Cooperative d'habitation de Montreal construit plus de 650 maisons unifamiliales pour ses membres. A travers elle, les syndicats nationaux, l'Action catholique et le secteur cooperatif travaillent au meme but : procurer a chaque famille sa maison. Ce projet « alternatif » de societe urbaine pour les salaries canadiens-francais illustre l'atmosphere sociopolitique du Quebec entre la Grande Depression et la Revolution tranquille. Au cours de cet episode marquant du developpement urbain de Montreal se concretise l'essoufflement du corporatisme social cher a certains milieux nationalistes canadiens-francais devant la modernisation de l'appareil etatique. Parallelement, des formes laicisees d'action communautaire, annoncant l'animation sociale des annees 1960, commencent a surgir. L'auteur a rencontre des artisans de la Cooperative d'habitation de Montreal et constitue une vaste documentation. Il situe, raconte et analyse une periode encore vivante qui interessera, a divers titres, les temoins de l'epoque, les historiens, les intervenants sociaux et le grand public.
