Abstract
This paper is concerned with tne possible relationship between commitment, writing and utopia. We approach the question as it surfaces in the 1980s in two books written by Paul Chamberland. Accordingly, in our view an utterance is committed if it refers to a particular anthropological identity, that is an explicit consciousness of belonging to a community. In other words, the poet's attitude, like that of the intellectual, is determined by his adherence to a given society in such a way that the pronoun "we" becomes a proper noun (We). The discourse of the essay being as it is both poetical and philosophical fits well an approach which is meant to be the collectivity proper to the situation in Quebec.
