Abstract
Au XIXe siecle, les catholiques font face a la naissance de la litterature industrielle, manifestation de la proto-histoire de la culture mediatique. Denoncant violemment les ouvrages et mettant une large partie des Lettres francaises a l'index, l'Eglise et les editeurs confessionnels mettent egalement en place un systeme de distribution d'une paralitterature conforme aux preceptes religieux. Dans les annees 1840 et 1850, s'implantent massivement en France, en Belgique et au Quebec des bibliotheques paroissiales dediees aux lectures du peuple. D'un pays a l'autre, et notamment grâce a l'archiconfrerie de l'Œuvre des bons livres fondee a Bordeaux, circulent methodes d'encadrement du lectorat populaire et collections d'edifiants. Ce dispositif alliant orthodoxie du livre et orthopraxie de la lecture temoigne de l'etat precoce de veille de l'Eglise catholique dans la sphere culturelle. Il renseigne egalement sur les processus de metamorphoses de la censure a l'epoque contemporaine.
