<b>Der 30-jährige Krieg (1618–1648) war durch eine blutige Auseinandersetzung gekennzeichnet, in der einerseits die katholische Kirche gegen die reformationsfreudige „Protestantische Union“, andererseits verschiedene Konfliktparteien um die Herrschaft in Europa kämpften. In diesen Kriegswirren, in denen es um Glauben und Macht ging, übernahm der flämische Maler Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640) eine rege diplomatische Vermittlerrolle. Im Dienste der Erzherzogin Isabella von Spanien führte Rubens zwischen 1622 und 1640 Friedensverhandlungen zwischen den Konfliktparteien Frankreich, Spanien, England und den Niederlanden, und hinterließ dadurch eine umfassende Korrespondenz und zahlreiche Bilder, die uns Einblick in seine Zeit und seinen Gesundheitszustand geben.</b>
