Summary The knowledge of the structural control on sedimentation has lately improved in the non -marine Golfo San Jorge Basin, Argentina, based on high resolution 3D seismic analysis and new exploratory concepts. Recognition of the sediment sources, transport modes, and depositional areas are even more important now, as the strategy of hydrocarbon exploration has shifted towards subtle stratigraphic traps. Detailed mapping of key horizons allowed the identification of well-defined seismic patterns (e.g., clinoforms), whose morphology was interpreted as southeast prograding sequences into a lacustrine environment. The described geobodies were deposited in partially connected depocenters through a relay ramp which served as a conduit for sediment transport to lower zones. The study provides a framework for the exploration of the remaining hydrocarbon potential through the recognition of geobodies in other parts of the basin in similar paleogeographic context.
