La ville de Montréal reste, depuis le XIXe siècle, le lieu privilégié de l’immigration au Québec. Regroupant plus d’une centaine de communautés distinctes, elle répond aujourd’hui à l’appellation de ville cosmopolite qu’on pourrait comme un modèle de vivre ensemble qui va au-delà de la simple juxtaposition de communautés ethniques sur un même territoire. La ville cosmopolite est une ville à identités plurielles partagées par ses habitants. Comment l’immigration marque-t-elle le visage de Montréal ? Comment se transcrit le cosmopolitisme dans la ville ? Montréal ne répond-elle pas plutôt à des logiques de ségrégation, de zonage ou de cohabitation des nouvelles populations immigrantes avec les populations locales ? S’agit-il d’un « cosmopolitisme de façade », comme dans de nombreuses villes nord-américaines, caractérisé par la ségrégation de chaque groupe ethnique dans un espace délimité ou des commerces spécifiques dans un quartier déterminé ?
