Este artigo apresenta descobertas de um projeto de pesquisa levado a cabo entre 2001 e 2004 no contexto das atividades do Centre francofone d'informatisation des organisations (Cefrio) (Centro Francófono para a Informatização de Organizações) e possui três partes. A primeira trata da distinção entre o fenômeno da comunidade conectada e o conceito de comunidade aprendiz. A segunda parte enfoca o modelo tipológico, que é uma ferramenta elaborada para diagnosticar comunidades e para posicioná-las relativamente a uma estrutura de referência representada pela comunidade aprendiz. A terceira parte apresenta o modelo de desenvolvimento de uma comunidade aprendiz.
