Abstract
This article explores the relationships among modernism, mass culture, and consumption. It argues that traces of modernism can be seen in everything around us, because the present contours of our lives, in both their material and subjective aspects, at one time represented a revolutionary reimagining of visual culture, language, social space, and individual identities. The article explains that modernist forms of art and life arose as material and psychological embodiments of the experience of modernity in a world undergoing market-driven modernization.
