Cet article propose une approche hierarchique pour la binarisation d'images de documents graphiques, ba- see sur un decoupage en arbre quaternaire, dont l'interet est de traiter l'image a differents niveaux. Une image est d'abord segmentee a bas niveau grâce a une approche glo- bale de binarisation, puis le resultat de cette premiere seg- mentation est localement affine apres un decoupage recur- sif de l'image initiale. Ce decoupage hierarchique permet de combiner les avantages de deux types d'approches duales, globale et locale. Les resultats sont prometteurs : selon des criteres d'homogeneite et de contraste fixes, la separation entre le fond et le contenu du document est meilleure que celle obtenue avec certaines methodes classiques.
