Abstract
Une étude basée sur une trentaine d’épigrammes de Martial portant sur les distributions de cadeaux — dont celles qui avaient lieu à l’occasion des Saturnales, des jeux et de la salutatio matinale — permet de démontrer, exemples à l’appui, les différents changements survenus au fil du temps dans la perception que cet auteur avait de la sportule. Ces changements d’opinion vont de pair avec son ascension sociale et économique alors qu’il devient lui-même un donateur éventuel.
