L’ethnographie est une démarche d’enquête adoptée par une multiplicité de disciplines. Elle ne se réduit pas à un ensemble de techniques et d’instruments, mais renvoie à une démarche globale qui rend cohérent un travail de terrain, un questionnement de recherche progressif et la production de connaissances (Laplantine, 2005). Son intérêt est peu contesté et, mieux, sa plus-value méthodologique est largement reconnue, notamment parce qu’elle articule, selon des combinaisons variables, observations, entretiens et recherches documentaires (Cefaï, 2003; Lapassade, 2001; Spradley, 1979). De fait, l’ethnographie est généralement valorisée depuis les grandes enquêtes des chercheuses et chercheurs attachés à la tradition de Chicago : elle a fait ses preuves sur de nombreux terrains, où elle a permis de produire des résultats stimulants et de renouveler interprétations et théorisations (Cefaï, 2010). Plus récemment, elle a fait l’objet d’un intérêt renouvelé en raison de la position « privilégiée » de l’ethnographe sur le terrain, qui lui permettrait de repenser les catégories qui ont traditionnellement dominé pour mieux comprendre et expliquer les phénomènes relevant de la modernité (Weber, 2009).
