Associes a la jeunesse, les etudiants ont longtemps ete percus, et se sont consideres eux-memes, comme l'avenir de la societe. Avant de constituer le groupe organise que l'on connait aujourd'hui, les etudiants ont maintes fois pris la parole dans les grands debats publics au nom du role qu'ils joueraient dans le futur. Sans cesse tirailles entre maintenant et demain, certains d'entre eux se sont montres « impatients d'etre eux-memes ».De quelle maniere un groupe en vient-il a prendre conscience de son existence ? Qu'est-ce qui suscite la prise de parole et l'action sociale ? Quelle importance prend la jeunesse, le genre, l'appartenance ethnique et religieuse ou encore la classe sociale dans la construction de l'identite estudiantine ?Cet ouvrage repond a ces questions en abordant l'histoire de deux communautes etudiantes montrealaises, celles de l'Universite de Montreal et de l'Universite McGill. De 1895 a 1960, les etudiants de ces deux universites ont fonde des journaux et des associations etudiantes, ils ont fait entendre leur voix dans les debats sociaux, ils sont entres en contact avec des etudiants et des jeunes d'un peu partout au Quebec, au Canada et dans le monde, ils ont reagi aux grands evenements du siecle comme les guerres mondiales, la Crise des annees 1930, la montee du communisme et les querelles dans le financement des universites. Surtout, ils ont du se positionner face a la representation que la societe et les autorites universitaires se faisaient d'eux. Elite de demain, jeune generation, groupe social, classe sociale, jeunes travailleurs intellectuels, groupe de pression : autant de categories selon lesquelles les etudiants ont tente de definir, au long de la periode etudiee, leur statut et leur role dans la societe.
