ATAN BRULOTTE, auteur rput surtout pour ses recueils de nouvelles, excelle raconter des histoires qu'on pourrait dfinir dans les termes employs par Denis de Rougemont propos de Kafka, comme des narrations qui suscitent en nous un tat d'extrme lucidit et nous ramn[ent], avec une sorte d'humour inflexible, la conscience la plus sobre de notre humaine condition 1 .En mme temps, les nouvelles de l'auteur qubcois, notamment celles runies dans le volume Le surveillant publi en 1982 (troisime dition en 1995), crent, avec le ralisme minutieux dont on a fait un attribut de la narration kafkaenne, une sorte de kalidoscope o l'on retrouve maints thmes et symboles rappelant l'univers absurde imagin par l'auteur du Procs 2 .Ainsi, dans la nouvelle L'indication, l'immeuble ultramoderne est un vritable labyrinthe o tout le monde s'gare, y compris ceux qui y travaillent : plus on explique le trajet suivre, plus on s'y perd.
