Abstract
Au chapitre CXX du Nouveau Paris , Mercier décrit une maquette de Paris, réalisée par un certain Arnaud et exposée au Palais-Égalité en octobre 1797. Tout au long du chapitre, cette représentation de Paris en miniature agit à la fois comme une mise en abyme de l’entreprise panoramique de l’auteur et comme un microcosme de l’œuvre en train de s’écrire. La description de la maquette repose en effet sur la mise en scène d’une série de regards individualisés qui se projettent dans l’espace urbain et qui y inscrivent leur expérience de la ville. L’agencement de ces regards-témoins mène, par accumulation de perspectives, à la construction d’une mémoire collective qui se dessine au sein même de l’espace urbain. S’il présente un abrégé de l’histoire de la Révolution, ce chapitre révèle surtout que cette histoire n’existe qu’en tant qu’elle est portée par des individus. L’originalité de Mercier est ainsi de suggérer que les lieux, en tant qu’ils font l’objet d’appropriations individuelles, sont les principales instances par lesquelles s’organise la mémoire révolutionnaire.
