Que se passait-il dans les prisons parisiennes d’Ancien Régime ? Cachots sinistres, concierges tyranniques, abus, vexations et désespoir concentrent-ils vraiment tout ce qu’il y a à en dire ? Des cas comme celui de Jean Pierre Ravinet, prisonnier rétif du Grand Châtelet, permettent d’éclairer la question. La procédure judiciaire à laquelle ses frasques donnent lieu expose, en filigrane, un monde bien plus complexe. Elle dessine une geôle dans laquelle les détenus ont un rôle actif à jouer dans l’organisation quotidienne. Devant un manque chronique de ressources, concierges et guichetiers confient aux enfermés certaines responsabilités et s’appuient sur l’aurorégulation des prisonniers. Si le compromis semble intenable, il demeure néanmoins l’un des meilleurs garants de l’ordre dans cette prison d’Ancien Régime.
