Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The franco-spanish invasion of 1807 under the command of general Junot had forced the Portuguese court and royal family to take refuge in Brasil. Although the occupation of the national territory had ended - at least temporarily - in 1808, the fight in Continental Portugal extended until 1813, and in the Iberian Peninsula until 1814. The war against Napoleonic France effectively ended only in 1815; meanwhile, there was a long period of international conflict in which our country was involved, and during which the alliance with the English was vital to nation's survival. The regent prince D. Joao (who would become king D. Joao VI) found himself in an especially difficult situation: the declaration of war of the U.S.A. on the 18th July of 1812, and the subsequent invasion of Canada by its army. Rio de Janeiro's Court faced the paradox of, on the one hand, being allied to one of the contenders - Great Britain - in the military conflict against France (initially, also against Spain in the years of 1807-1808) in Europe, in South America and in the oceans, and, on the other hand, maintaining cordial relations with the American government. In this article, we analyse the diplomatic, political, ideological and strategical implications of the difficult neutrality of Portugal in the War of Canada (1812-1815). Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
