Abstract
Situee sur la partie orientale du Massif armoricain, la Mayenne presente un relief peu marque au sud, et accidente au nord (collines de Normandie, Alpes mancelles). Le mont des Avaloirs (416 m), aux confi ns de l’Orne et de la Sarthe, est le point culminant de tout le Grand Ouest ou la riviere Mayenne prend sa source. Celleci traverse le departement du nord au sud. Les sols mayennais sont globalement riches en limons. Les sols argilo-limoneux (les plus frequents) ont un bon potentiel agronomique. Ceux a forte dominante de limons, de structure plus fragile, sont plus diffi ciles a travailler. La Mayenne benefi cie de l’infl uence oceanique. Les normales climatiques calculees sur 30 ans a Laval font ressortir une temperature moyenne annuelle de 11,5°C, un cumul annuel de precipitations de 750 mm et d’ensoleillement de 1 650 heures. Le nord du departement est plus froid et plus arrose.
