Abstract
Introduction: childbirth’s maternal experience can have a major impact, on women and families life in a short and a long term. Many factors influence it. The “Empowerment” is recognized as promoting positive women’s experience in the anglo-saxon and quebec literature. It proposes that caregivers, especially midwives, have the role to let women to experience it. The main objective is to optimize the support for women from midwives in delivery room. The operational objective is to perceive what women retain in the immediate postpartum about the offered support by midwives in delivery room. Three hypothesis are issued: women evoke the importance to express themselves about their needs regarding their delivery and to be actively listened by the midwife. According to women experience, it is recognized that information about the labor given by the midwife is essential to be involved in the delivery room during the childbirth. The midwife support is mainly dedicated to patient’s labor pain management. Material and Methods: this is a qualitative study with fifteen semi-structured interviews occurring in type three maternity ward postpartum service Louis Mourier (Colombes, 92). Interviews have taken place between the first day and the day before the patient release from the maternity ward. Obstetric and demographic data were also collected from patient records. Inclusion criteria were: primiparity and primigravidity. Non-inclusion criteria were: therapeutic abortion, fetal death in utero, perinatal death, patients wishing to make an abandonment procedure and minor patients. Exclusion criteria were: patients who did not speak french and who refused to participate at the study. Results: the first hypothesis is confirmed: the expression of women needs and the support given by the midwife are necessary. But a third of women said that they didn’t feel any needs. The second hypothesis is partially confirmed: women evoke the important role of receiving information but they did not directly link this information to their active involvement. It helps women to realize, to project themselves and to understand the childbirth process. They are also vectors of kindness, reinsurance and consideration of their own person.The third hypothesis is not confirmed: aid pain relief is not the main role of the midwife. It is even mentioned there absence in this role. Nevertheless, the midwife provides physical and emotional support to patients. She advises them for the use of epidural analgesia.Conclusion: the operational objective is reached, additional studies could be necessary to use these results in the practice of midwifery.
