Abstract
La trayectoria de José Pescara, labrador y hacendado mendocino que logró no sólo edificar un amplio patrimonio familiar sino ejercer una serie de funciones en la justicia menor de la campaña mendocina, sirve de mirador para reflexionar sobre, al menos, dos cuestiones. Por una parte, acerca de las diversas formas a través de las cuales ciertos advenedizos lograron integrarse exitosamente en las élites tardocoloniales y revolucionarias rioplatenses. Por otra, respecto de la experiencia de la justicia de proximidad, a la vez como reconocimiento de prominencia y recurso para la acumulación de capital simbólico. La hipótesis de trabajo sostiene que las responsabilidades judiciales ejercidas por Pescara dieron cuenta de su incorporación en una trama de relaciones privilegiadas concentradas en el cuerpo de vecinos representados por el cabildo, pero también de que la justicia de proximidad ocupó un rol relevante en su propia estrategia de reproducción de su patrimonio familiar.
