Abstract
Batti, dans Les géorgiques (1981), est un personnage subalterne auquel le texte accorde pourtant une importance et même un privilège particuliers. En examinant la façon dont ce personnage de domestique lit les lettres du Général, nous verrons comment Claude Simon fait de la lecture une expérience sensible sans en négliger l’historicité. Plus, il semble que la lecture de Batti redouble celle du romancier : elle ouvre ainsi une réflexion implicite sur la discordance des choses et des signes et sur l’impact imaginaire que peut avoir une correspondance.
