Abstract
Neoliberalism is “a theory of political economic practices that proposes that human well-being can best be advanced by liberating individual entrepreneurial freedoms and skills within an institutional framework characterized by strong private property rights, free markets, and free trade” (Harvey, 2007, p.1). Neo-liberalism has significantly transformed and impacted the shape of the education system and specifically the teachers’ world. For Neo liberal reforms have extended their reach into the education system globally to impact the professional lives of teachers many of which are increasingly experiencing reduced wages, high stakes testing, pay by performance and shorter contracts amongst other neo-liberal reforms (Robertson, 2013). In this presentation I seek to examine the teachers’ work in Egypt with a neoliberal lens. I will organize my presentation around five main dimensions namely: the move towards privatization and decreased public funding; the increased standards and accountability for teachers; the de-professionalization of teachers; The limited union role and weakened teachers’ voices and finally the vilification of the discourse about teachers in Egypt. Hence I seek to examine Neo liberal reforms and the extent to which they have affected teachers’ work in Egypt.
