Abstract
Pour les personnages de L’herbe , roman de Claude Simon publié en 1958, le livre et la lecture apparaissent comme un objet et un lieu de tensions — tensions indissociables de celles qui existent entre les personnages eux-mêmes. De la croyance aveugle au rejet pur et simple, toutes les attitudes possibles face à la lecture sont représentées. Mais dans tous les cas, ces personnages, chacun à leur manière, mettent la lecture, le livre et les valeurs qui leur sont associées en question. Il n’empêche que la lecture est aussi décrite comme une expérience singulière qui engage le lecteur à mieux comprendre l’autre et à mieux se comprendre soi-même. Et cette expérience de lecture peut conduire à celle de l’écriture. Lire le roman L’herbe à partir du motif de la lecture, c’est peut-être découvrir le pacte que Simon, dès 1958, propose à ses lecteurs présents et à venir.
