Lire en latin La guerre civile de César puis rendre compte du sens de cette lecture en restituant le texte originel sous la forme d’un texte rédigé en langue française, tel est le pensum infligé au collégien que mettent en scène Histoire (1967) et La bataille de Pharsale (1969). Pourtant, cet ouvrage fut pour Claude Simon une première approche de l’événement central que constitua dans son existence sa participation à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ensuite, complétant cette lecture par celle de La guerre civile (La Pharsale) de Lucain, il put éprouver la tension qu’implique la transposition dans le domaine romanesque de la technique cubiste qui s’attache à rendre compte des différents points de vue d’un objet sur une même image. Pharsale, lieu historique où se joua autrefois le destin du monde, lieu géographique aujourd’hui abandonné de tous, constitue l’un de ces mots-carrefours, l’un de ces mots qui « en suscitent plusieurs autres » qu’évoque le romancier dans sa préface à Orion aveugle (1970). Pharsale, érigé en matrice de l’écriture scripturale, révèle selon quelles modalités l’écriture contrainte peut ouvrir l’accès aux sentiers de la création, d’une création qui confère aux mots leur entière liberté, leur inaliénable autonomie. Pharsale devenu en somme la clé d’une parole qui restitue à la langue romanesque sa légitimité.
