Abstract
Depuis 1978, Robert Melançon a fait paraître de nombreux recueils de poèmes qui constituent une oeuvre cohérente associant l’écriture de la poésie au développement d’une poétique. Celle-ci prend la forme de fragments d’« art poétique » intégrés aux poèmes et d’un certain nombre d’essais. Axée sur l’observation, la poésie de Melançon s’attache d’abord, dans les premiers recueils, à définir ses propres limites, en mettant en oeuvre une critique de la subjectivité, dont la conception est ensuite renouvelée par la pratique du renga , en collaboration avec Jacques Brault. Dans la suite de l’oeuvre, les formes traditionnelles du vers régulier, puis du sonnet, prendront valeur de médiations fondamentales, au même titre que la référence à la peinture et la recherche des fondements de nombreuses oeuvres poétiques, de provenances et d’époques très diverses. Au fil du développement de l’oeuvre, la négativité, tout en restant présente, accorde de plus en plus de place à l’acceptation des limites de la poésie.
