Abstract
Parmi les poètes qui ont composé un « Art poétique » au cours du xx e siècle, on compte étonnamment Roger Caillois. Ce fait surprend dans la mesure où Caillois a plus d’une fois dénoncé les supercheries de la poésie dans ses travaux. Or si ses propos sont parfois teintés de haine, ils semblent par ailleurs naître d’un réel attachement envers la poésie. C’est avant tout cet attachement qui aura conditionné l’écriture de son Art poétique (1958), assez marginal en raison de la fermeté avec laquelle il légifère, au moment même où l’idée de réglementer la poésie passe pour désuète. Sous la forme d’une confession négative, Caillois en vient à définir un cadre à la fois pratique et éthique qui vise à assurer la réussite du poème et la bonne conduite du poète. Cette démarche, empreinte de classicisme et d’humanisme, répond en bonne partie à l’essor de la poétique surréaliste conspuée par Caillois en filigrane.
