Abstract
This article describes Toronto’s aggressive rebuilding and expansion plans for its city and suburban transit system. The leader in rail transit in the 1960s and 1970s, Toronto took a step backwards in the 1990s when it destroyed one of North America’s largest electric trolley systems. Now Toronto Transit Commission officials are forging ahead with a 15-year, C$6 billion development plan. This includes seven new light rail routes as well as new subway cars, Scarborough Rapid Transit cars and buses. The city’s Union Station was awarded a C$280 million contract for signal improvements; those improvements are expected to be completed by 2014. Toronto’s GO Transit expects ridership to double in the next decade.
