Dans un ouvrage récent ( Monster in der frühgriechischen Kunst: Die Überwindung des Unfassbaren , 2015), Lorenz Winckler-Horaček étudie la figure des « monstres » dans l’art figuré de la Grèce à l’époque archaïque, spécialement à partir de la peinture de vases corinthienne, dont il prend en compte toute la production. Il entend démontrer que ces hybrides sont les symboles du « monde du “dehors” » ou monde animal. L’analyse échoue cependant à convaincre, pour plusieurs raisons qui sont successivement développées. En particulier, on regrettera que l’interprétation eschatologique, naguère défendue par plusieurs auteurs, ait été négligée.
