This article analyzes the generator direct axis open-circuit time constants in GENTPJ model used for power system dynamic simulations. Theoretical analysis and computer simulation results have revealed a deficiency in the GENTPJ model time constants which affects the simulated dynamic performance of the synchronous generator. Results from actual WECC/NERC synchronous generator model validation work are provided to compare the GENTPJ model with another synchronous generator model commonly used in the past. The potential impact of converting older generator models to GENTPJ model is demonstrated by comparing field test results on a hydro-turbine generating unit with computer simulation results. Further study and investigation on the GENTPJ model is proposed and discussed.
