Le propos de cet article est d’aller au coeur de l’intervention en massothérapie telle qu’elle se pratique depuis une dizaine d’années au Québec, et de montrer que cette modalité thérapeutique est beaucoup plus qu’un adjuvant aux désordres musculo-squelettiques. Sans lui attribuer une portée essentiellement psychologique, l’auteure définit la massothérapie comme faisant partie des psychothérapies à implication corporelle, c’est-à-dire des thérapies qui sont centrées sur le corps du patient, et dans lesquelles le thérapeute s’intéresse aussi à ce qui se produit dans son propre corps. L’accent est mis sur ce qui advient au corps et sur les caractéristiques propres au contexte thérapeutique de la massothérapie, comme la nudité, l’intimité et la promotion de l’écoute des messages émis par le corps. Ces caractéristiques font de cette pratique une forme puissante de médecine douce, parce qu’elle « soumet » son utilisateur à un habitus et à des valeurs le plus souvent étrangers à la relation au corps et à soi-même qui prévaut en Occident.
