Abstract
The foreign policies of Canada and of France had few similarities during the 1960s. The multilateral, « integrationist » and supranational approach favoured by Canada and the approach based on the primacy of bilateral relations, the nation and the nation-state which de Gaulle promoted were basically at odds. Official Canadian views about a foreign policy so different from Canada’s are therefore all the more significant. Canadian authorities were well informed about the basis and the substance of the foreign policy of Gaullist France. Their attitude was dispassionate, often understanding. Despite disagreements, Canada had to have correct relations with France because the latter became an issue in internal Canadian politics.
