Resumo: Sustentabilidade e desenvolvimento compoem um debate muitoem voga na sociedade. Para entender o seu verdadeiro conceito e necessariodivagar por sua historia e acontecimentos. Ao longo do artigo,a evolucao desses conceitos sera analisada e relacionada a atualidade,com a fi nalidade de visualizar estrategias e formas de conscientizacaourbanas e globais para a sustentabilidade. Assim, a implantacao do desenvolvimentosustentavel urbano podera ser mais adequada, projetandomelhorias para geracoes futuras, obtendo a real qualidade de vida. Oartigo objetiva estudar a sustentabilidade com o intuito de conscientizartoda a sociedade assim como orgaos politicos, da necessidade do uso deestrategias para o sucesso do desenvolvimento urbano. A metodologiautilizada para o tema abordado foi a revisao bibliografi ca, e seu estudosera contemplado atraves dos subtitulos: conceito de sustentabilidade,consideracoes historicas sobre desenvolvimento, desenvolvimento esuas multiplas faces, desenvolvimento e sustentabilidade, e, novos debatessobre desenvolvimento.
