Le rôle de l’agriculture dans la gestion de la biodiversité est ambivalent : si les pratiques agricoles, dans leur histoire, ont soutenu la biodiversité, l'intensification des pratiques a largement contribué à son érosion. Aujourd’hui, de nouvelles trajectoires (industrialisation de l'agriculture, meilleure prise en compte de la biodiversité) se développent. Face à la complexité des phénomènes, le recours aux indicateurs est utile pour révéler facilement et à moindre coût les interactions entre agriculture et biodiversité et suivre leur évolution. C’est dans cet objectif que l’unité SAD-Paysage a élaboré l’indicateur Ecobordure, un outil d’évaluation de l’état agro-écologique des bordures de champ. Basé sur la reconnaissance d’un petit nombre d’espèces végétales herbacées réparties dans trois groupes, les espèces dites « forestières », « prairiales » et « adventices », Ecobordure permet d’inférer à la fois les causes qui expliquent l’état de ces bordures (facteurs environnementaux et agricoles) et les conséquences que l'on peut déduire de cet état (services écologiques potentiels). Enfin, sa fonction d’évaluation et de diagnostic en fait un outil privilégié d’échanges avec les acteurs du développement, d’associations, de l'enseignement agricole et de collectivités territoriales.
