Abstract
Sketches of Kitsault is a composition for wind ensemble based on the events between 1980 and 1982 in the mining town of Kitsault, British Columbia, Canada. The goal was to create a four-movement suite of short snapshots of specific areas around the town of Kitsault after its abandonment thirty years ago. The piece was written by studying multi-movement works from different composers who utilize a variety of different aleatoric techniques and various chord structures to create unique listening experiences. These include box notation like that used in Derek Jenkin's We Seven, chord structures from various Eric Whitacre pieces, and rhythmic figures from movie scores by composers like Hans Zimmer. Sketches of Kitsault is a compositional exploration of the ideas behind abandonment and tries to find meaning in a place that is no longer of use.
