Éminent archéologue britannique, Colin Renfrew livre ici sa vision de l’origine des langues indo-européennes. Il salue l’apport de Jean-Paul Demoule qui dès 1980 expose son scepticisme devant les hypothèses alors en vogue dans les études indo-européennes. Tous deux critiquent dans ces études l’approche principalement fondée sur la linguistique qui ne fait appel à l’archéologie que pour confirmer les hypothèses avancées. Les concepts d’Ursprache et d’Urheimat, qui impliquent un modèle généalogique linguistique, sont aujourd’hui battus en brèche par l’archéologie d’une part et par certains linguistes d’autre part. C. Renfrew plaide pour une approche en « réseau » qui utiliserait les données linguistiques et archéologiques.
