En Colombia se ha localizado un depósito de hierro bandeado de grandes dimensiones. En el presente artículo se describen algunas de sus características mineralógicas, la secuencia estratigráfica en la que se encuentra, su relación con las unidades litológicas identificadas en la Amazonía de Colombia y sus analogías y diferencias con depósitos de hierro bandeado en varias partes del Mundo. Se describen además estromatolitos silíceos que lo infrayacen y su posible relación genética con el yacimiento de hierro. Dichos estromatolitos presentan además ocurrencias auríferas, cuya génesis parece estar directamente relacionada al ambiente químico local generado por la actividad biológica.
