Abstract
Cet article interroge à de nouveaux frais la présomption s’attachant à l’idée qu’une part d’indicible rançonne l’opération de traduction et fait peser sur elle une objection préjudicielle à l’accomplissement de son mandat. Le point de vue de Georges Steiner, tenant de cette option, est confronté à celui d’Henri Meschonnic, qui propose une poétique du traduire qui relativise considérablement cet impact, qu’il impute à des facteurs sociaux et historiques. Meschonnic conteste pareillement l’ascendant du paradigme de la communication comme tuteur de la traduction, ainsi que la primauté de la motion herméneutique mise de l’avant par Steiner. Les arguties de Jose Ortega y Gasset sur l’indicible sont aussi battues en brèche. Prenant le relais de la théorie critique élaborée par les Romantiques d’Iéna et le postulat s’attachant à la transversalité des genres, Walter Benjamin voit dans le champ d’opération de la traduction un continuum de métamorphoses. Meschonnic emboîte le pas à cette vue en affirmant que la traduction implique une poétique qui construit une forme-sujet où le rythme et l’oralité renouent avec le langage du corps et concrétisent l’engagement sociopolitique du discours qui répudie le surplomb de quelque indicible ou impossibilité formelle de traduire.
