Exploring the Economic and Social Impacts of Laurier Brantford Campus

Abstract
The city of Brantford, ON, once a major manufacturing centre of the province, underwent a period of decline in the 1970s and 1980s but is now thought by many to be in an economic upswing. Many politicians in the city have suggested that the 1999 opening of Laurier Brantford, a satellite campus of Wilfrid Laurier University, was responsible for revitalizing the city. We assess this claim by visualizing levels of median income, unemployment, university degree acquisition, and crime rates in Brantford and comparing them with Ontario levels between 1996 and 2006. This period accounts for census data collected both before and after the campus's foundation. By comparing how these four factors have changed in the downtown core and in the periphery of the city, we observe that the arrival of Laurier Brantford has not resulted in many major improvements for the residents of downtown Brantford. In particular, we find that the city's core has consistently lagged behind provincial levels of economic prosperity, education, and crime, despite the arrival of the Laurier Brantford campus.
