Can Art (Re)build a Community? The Roşia Montană Case, between Past and Future

Abstract
This paper tries to see how art and community structures could be connected.The general considerations in this respect are made through a case study: Roşia Montană, Romania.Here, a Canadian-based company, RMGC, tried to open a gold mine and to use large quantities of sodium cyanide in the industrial process, destroying also very precious roman archaeological remains and a unique landscape.The opposition against this project, which formed the largest civic movement in Romania after the fall of communism, used art and culture in the battle.We try to analyze, from an anthropological point of view, the uses of different arts, either by opponents or by supporters of the RMGC project, and try to argue that art is a tool for building or rebuilding communities and for the creation of an active, dynamic civic conscience.
